Biostatistics Courses: School of Public Health at Brown University
First year fellows are invited to apply to take two concurrent graduate-level biostatistics courses, entitled:
BioStatistics and Data Analysis I (PHP2507): Fall Semester
BioStatistics and Data Analysis II (PHP2508): Spring Semester
Course Objectives
The objective of the year long, two-course sequence is for students to develop the knowledge, skills and perspectives necessary to analyze data to answer public health questions and provide quantitative information to drive public health practice. The courses will focus on statistical principles as well as the applied skills necessary to answer public health questions using data, including: data acquisition, data analysis, data interpretation and the written and visual presentation of results.
Specifically, in the fall semester, students will:
• Develop and refine a research question that can be adequately addressed using the available data
• Operationalize concepts using existing data sources.
• Complete univariate and bivariate analyses using appropriate statistical techniques
• Interpret data analyses results in the context of previous public health knowledge
• Present and interpret the results of data analyses, including the appropriate use of tables and figures
• Demonstrate an understanding of key statistical principles necessary to address public health questions using data
The courses are held at the School of Public Health at Brown University, as well as via Zoom. There is a nominal application fee.
Hassenfeld Institute Research Scholars Program at Brown University
The Hassenfeld Institute Research Scholars Program for Clinical Fellows and Junior Faculty is a research program where selected students "will play active roles in the work of the institute under the mentorship of institute-affiliated faculty, while gaining outstanding training opportunities for their future careers in maternal and child health."
One of our former fellows, Dr. Catherine Buck, was one of the first graduates of the program!
The Hassenfeld Institute Research Scholars Program
The Hassenfeld Institute Research Scholars Program for Clinical Fellows and Junior Faculty is made possible through the generous support of the family of Alan Hassenfeld.
Research Development Sessions at Hasbro Children's Hospital
In addition to the Clinical Research Design course held at Women & Infants Hospital during new fellows' orientation, the Department of Emergency Medicine at Hasbro Children's Hospital each year offers sessions on study design, REDCap data collection, research ethics, forging a constructive mentor/mentee relationship, amongst other topics. One may attend whichever sessions appeal to them.
