Simulation Program

A Key Training Modality for our Fellows, Faculty, Residents, and Beyond

Simulation education at Women & Infants Hospital is used for skills acquisition and mastery, scenario-based education, and process improvement on clinical protocols and systems effectiveness. Dr. Kelleigh Briden directs the NICU Simulation Program. We collaborate with The Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University, Rhode Island College, URI, et al. Patient safety and quality care are benefactors of simulation-based education.

For an overview of our fellowship's simulation program, please see below.

Simulation Training for NICU Fellows:

Content areas include:

  • Code Leadership
  • Effective Communication
  • Airway Management
  • Management of Air Leak
  • Practice NRP Protocols & Principles

1st year fellows participate in case-based simulated scenarios regarding high-risk transport cases and transport-related discussions with a standardized actress. Scenarios are viewed and debriefed with transport team and co-fellows.

Annual opportunity for didactic and simulated difficult discussions with standardized actresses as parents. Topics have included periviable prenatal consult, discussions regarding redirection of care, autopsy conference, discussion regarding medication error and delivering news regarding poor developmental outcome.

Reviewed as part of Fellows' Conference curriculum:

  • Cardioversion
  • Abdominal Paracentesis
  • Air leak and Pleurocentesis
  • Access: IO, UVC, IV

Workshop to train fellows to facilitate debriefings of difficult situations including personal conflicts, resuscitations or systems concerns. Sessions utilize both didactic and simulation-based interactive debriefing sessions with peers and standardized actresses.

The Simulation Center hosts all NRP Certification within Women & Infants. Fellows often choose to become NRP instructors upon renewal of their NRP status and contribute to the certification of employees across the institution.

The Simulation Center is often used for quality improvement initiatives and protocol development, such as the recent protocol development to standardize delayed cord clamping in preterm infants; both OB and neonatology collaboratively created the protocol and simulated the process.
